Movie Night

11 Apr

Movie Night has really taken off in Abu Dhabi. No surprise there. After all, who wouldn’t want to lie on a sunbed, under the stars, on the shores of the Arabian Gulf? OK, your view may be restricted by a palm tree and the screen may wobble a bit in the breeze but who cares? The film won’t be hot from Hollywood – there are plenty of mega cinemas in AD for the latest blockbuster if that’s what you’re looking for. No, Movie Night is not about the movie. Sure, it helps if it’s Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman dishing out the one-liners but โ€œyou pays your money and you take your choiceโ€, right? Nope, it’s free.

Of course, the hotel management is not providing this out of the goodness of its heart. Waiters are on hand to bring you food and drink at the usual 5* hotel prices and we did indulge (you guessed, huh?). A burger and a beer might set you back a bit but the beef is wagu and of a size that means you probably won’t want any breakfast the next day. But it’s up to you. No pressure. So get there early to reserve the best sunbeds.

Oooh, what a lovely way to spend an evening! How nice to lay outside on a comfy sun bed on a warm night. That’s something they’ll never have in UK……

You’re absolutely right there, Georgie. Mind you, they won’t have them for much longer in AD either as it will be too hot even at night!

Yes they are so many hotels and resorts offering this here eh? even I am tempted so maybe one day over the week end ๐Ÿ™‚

This was Thursday night at the Intercontinental. I think different hotels have different evenings. Watch out as some advertise as “free” but have a “minimum spend” which is OK if you’re planning to eat there. Doesn’t really matter too much what the film is ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thanks for writing about this. I’ve been meaning to try out one of these movie nights and it was good to read about it from someone who has actually experienced it ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks, Diya. There are lots to choose from in Abu Dhabi now.

Have you tried any besides the Intercon one? I’m so tempted but need to find a free weekend to squeeze one in ๐Ÿ™‚

No, this was our first. All a bit amateur but great fun.

Now that’s just decadent! You could always take it a step further when you’re sailing again – dvd in a laptop on deck under the stars. Is it possible to charge a laptop using solar power? Or am I stretching the art of the possible a bit too far? Have enjoyed learning about AD but am looking forward to your travels again. Best wishes Sarah.

Thanks Sarah. Yes, laptop/tablet/phone all vital equipment for the modern sailor (well, us anyway) so we have to sort out the power supply to keep them charged up. The challenge for watching movies comes from immovable seating making it difficult for both of us to see the screen at the same time. Counting down the weeks now ๐Ÿ™‚
